Global Warming

We have talked quite a bit about Global Warming in class. After looking at all the evidence on the issue, what are your thoughts? Does Global Warming actual take place? Is it just a cycle of nature? Do humans have any responsibility for Global Warming? Should we be accountable for the issue and do something about it? Be sure to cite a source to justify your position.

Global warming is happenning whether you want to accept it or not. Glabal warming has been increasing with the help of humans. From treehugger.com "...the fact that the planet is heating up at a frenetic, unnatural pace." This is a source that is admitting the truth that humas are contributing to the heating up of the world. Humans have a responsibility for global warming that is larger than we realize. We are partly accountable and should research on how we can help to prevent global warming from increasing.

There are four steps we should follow to prevent global warming: Minimize drafts in your home, reduce wasted electricity, use more efficient light bulbs, and turn down your water heater (http://www.acoolerclimate.com/Articles/HowToPreventGlobalWarming.html). Another step we can do is to carpull with our friends and family, exhaust from cars emits much heat and also contributes to global warming.

Global is happening as we see it. However i believe is at the point where we don't have to worry about it quite yet. Yes it is important to be thinking about alternative fuels except we should be focusing more on this economy this is not going to affect our lifetimes. However i find that it is important to help support the fact that it is happening but to what affect a few degrees in the weather is not going to affect very much. However in we need to take small steps to keep the balance.

“Planetary emergency—a crisis that threatens the survival of our civilization and the habitability of the Earth”. That is what global warming is, as Al Gore explained. I agree with everything Josh said. Global warming is occurring, whether we want it to or not. Humans definitely have a lot to do with this warming of the Earth, with examples being burning fossil fuels, putting CO2 into the air, and destroying our ozone layer. We as not just a society, but as a world, should be limiting what hazardous chemicals go into the air and monitoring the atmosphere. I think it is time to make more drastic steps, unlike Jake. I feel procrastination will not get the results needed at this point. It has been put on the back burner for long enough. http://www.globalwarming.org/category/global-warming-101/

I also agree with what josh said. i believe that Nature effects Global Warming but humans increase the speed of it occuring. We need to start taking steps that will reduce global warming. We need to take responsible for increasing the speed of it occuring and take steps to lower/ slower the process. Some simple ways that we can slow the process are:
-Move your thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer
-Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchases
-Take a shower instead of a bath
-Buy locally grown and produced foods

There are many other ways that we can help the environment. Simple things can stop the process of Global Warming. And. by implimenting them, we can save the environment.

Following up with Sai, another easy way to reduce global warming is to use CFL bulbs (compact fluorescent light) for your lights in your home. Replacing an ordinary bulb with a CFL will save you $30 over the life of the bulb, as CFLs last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, use two-thirds less energy, and give off 70 percent less heat. If every family in the US replaced a single light bulb with a CFL, it would take away 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gases.

I found a nice link that is a list of 50 simple things you can do to help stop global warming: http://globalwarming-facts.info/50-tips.html It's very interesting and everyone should check it out. People must do their individual parts to help stop global warming. Most methods of reducing CO2 emissions involve saving energy, so any form of energy conservation plays a big role in preserving our future. I strongly agree with those who advocate for wind, solar, and geothermal energy. Solar seems to be the best in my opinion, but renewable energy with no emissions is definitely the way to go.

I just realized that I used the same link as Sai. Still, everyone should check that link out. Except Sai, he already has seen the list apparently... On another note, http://www.heartland.org/policybot/results/20549/Global_Warming_Madness_and_
How_to_Stop_It.html
mentions that "Global warming is the biggest environmental issue of our time. Its political and economic impacts will be larger than those associated with any other environmental issue."

The same website also talks about the "economic harm" that would be caused by supporting the reduction of CO2 emissions. Obviously, any cash value is worth the salvation of our planet and this shouldn't even be an issue. This is rather disappointing to know that people are concerned about wealth over a future for our species. The article was written in 2007 and the author is seriously oblivious to the problems that are presented by global climate change. I now realize why some people would doubt the severity of the situation, but reading other documents that share information contrary to that of this author would certainly push a person in the opposite direction.

Nathan i beat you to the sick website :) but yeah, everyone should check out this website. It gives simples things that anyone can do to reduce the effects of global warming.

Another big way that you can prevent global warming is to mess with your hot water heater a little. Set your hot water heater at 120 degrees to save energy and wrap it in a insulation blanket if it's older than 5 years, as older ones start to leak a lot of heat. Other than that just conserve more hot water. Take shorter cooler showers, wash your clothes in warm or cool water and let your dishes air dry instead of letting your dishwasher do it for you. These steps can save 500 pounds of Carbon Dioxide in each household annually if done right.
