Air Pollution
The town of Grafton still has much open space and little industry. Should we be concerned with air pollution in other parts of the state, country or world? Should we concern ourselves with laws or lack of laws restricting air pollution in these areas? Do not forget to use sources to support your argument, I have included some at the bottom of the page.

While yes, we do live in a small town with little industry that doesn't mean that we don't have air pollution. There are many natural sources of pollution such as pollin and mold which can become trapped in homes where there is no ventilation. Also, there is an increases amount of cases of asthma due to air pollution and it is not limited to the cities and large industrial areas. I used http://www.epa.gov/iaq/ for my source.
Asthma isn't always due to air pollution though, even if most is due to air pollution. I have had asthma since I was born, so.... Grafton also have so many cars and not many carpoolers and that increases air pollution as well. Pollen is often found places, floating through the air and it's sticky, so it gets all over something and makes it all moldy after awhile. Source? My brain =P
Happy Earth Day! Air Pollution is BAD! I'll follow up on this later...
We should be aware that earth pollution is growing and is going to continue to expand. With an increase in the population of the world more industries are going to form causing more pollution. we should increase the severety of the laws regarding air pollution where we can in order to make the air healthier. "Reports from both Canada and the United States suggest that health problems from air pollution continue to increase. Despite stringent pollution regulations in both countries, the problems associated with air pollution persist, partly due to the effects of global warming on air pollutants" (http://pollution-control.suite101.com/article.cfm/air_pollution_a_growing_environmental_threat).
There are some laws in Grafton concerning air pollution, primarily about asbestos. While I was working on my Eagle project up in the Municipal center, I originally planned to replace the carpeting, and the counters I built were supposed to be fastened to the ground. When I consulted with Mr. Berger, the inspector of buildings in grafton, he told me that I could not do this because the law prrevented me from doing any work that could disrupt the original planning of the room because of the likelihood of asbestos in the tiles and walls. Because of this, I had to completely change my building plans, but then we wouldn't want asbestos floating around the food bank! I used Mr. Robert Berger as my source.
While asbestos is dangerous and should be cautioned. The chances of it causing damage to anyone just from tiles is not every probable john matthers. Also, in resonce to what becca said about car pollution she is correct. Not many people that i know of carpool, for example on weekends when we go over someones house everyone takes a separate car there.
What about air pollution in other parts of the country? World? Should we be concerned about air pollution from coal burning electrical plants in the mid west? Should we care about air pollution in China?
Grafton is a small little town. We dont have very much air pollution. However we can still feel the effects. In traffic in Route 140 getting caught in traffic or behind larger vehicles gives us the same effect as air pollution. The effects are a headache and nausea. However these effects are not long lasting. Once we get out this traffic we inhale clean air again. My source was our air pollution notes.
Yes we should care about the air pollution in china. According to the air pollution video some of the san francisco air pollution is caused by china's.
We should definitely be concerned with air pollution in other parts of the state, country, and world. Acid rain is a great example of pollution that comes from other areas. Also, as everyone knows, China's pollution travels right over into the United States, and then further contaminates our air.
To answer the second part of the question, we should concern ourselves with laws or lack of, restricting air pollution in such areas. If laws were placed in cities limiting the air pollution, then this could mean cleaner air for many places, including Grafton. Air is not confined to a certain place at all, and travels globally. Anything put into the air will eventually circulate and reach even the smallest towns like Grafton.

If we are talking about air pollution, it doesn't matter whether it is local or not. I mean, of course if you live closer to a source of pollution you will be worse off than someone who lives far away; but air pollution is unique in the fact that it's in the air. That means it can travel great distances. So whether or not you live in China, it can still send pollution your way. New England is especially dangerous because all the air currents sweep the pollution over in our direction. Massachusetts, as a whole, is easily affected by air pollution and it will take global efforts to stop this problem. I got some information from http://www.tceq.state.tx.us/comm_exec/forms_pubs/pubs/pd/020/05-03/airpollution.html
I agree with Nathan on the concept of spreading air pollution. The atmostphere is always moving and never stagnant. Simple things like wind or precipitation can carry pollution across the globe.
"Air travel causes a lot more damage to the environment via carbon emissions than any other form of transport because it burns much more fuel, and aviation fuel (kerosene) is particularly polluting. Airlines do not pay tax on their fuel so they have no incentive to use less or make their prices reflect the damage done to the environment by flying."
I wanted you guys to read that because it was particularly disturbing to know that certain industries pollute so much and no one even cares to do anything about it. Though it has only been recently discovered that the streams from jets and aircraft as well as the launching of rockets into space cause so much pollution, action should be taken now.

What kirsten and everyone else said earlier are all true. Air pollution from different parts of the world and country can easily travel to Grafton.
25% of china's pollution comes to Los Angeles every year (this air pollution traveled over 3000 miles). So if the pollution can travel that far, pollution from near by cities such as New York and Boston would be affecting our air too and causing the pollution levels in Grafton to go up.
Not only that, if we created laws that controlled the amount of pollution that we sent into the air, the long time affects would be worth it. Think about it, if every small town around the world created laws that lowered the amount of air pollution being released, it would be a drastic difference in the environment.
Beijing is planning to spend $2 billion in order to clean up its air. Why cant cities all around the world do this? Scientists believe that just the cities around the world are going to cause the carbon dioxide rate to double within the next 30 years. If this is really true, we need to create air pollution laws before that really happens

Nathan's first comment is very true. Air from all over the United States travels to New England (bring the air pollution with it). We know this is a fact because the air brings the weather from all over United States to New England
The greatest concern about air pollution we have in Grafton comes from Carbon Monoxide and Nitrogen oxides saying that most of our air pollution comes from cars and trucks. If you look at our location right next to the mass turnpike, we get a lot of cars traveling through Grafton at a constant rate, building up emission levels around our area. I used http://www.scorecard.org/env-releases/cap/county.tcl?fips_county_code=25027#maps as my source.
